US Senate renews domestic violence bill despite Republican opposition

Women's groups scathing at attempts of group led by Marco Rubio to to derail reauthorisation of Violence Against Women Act

The US Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass legislation reauthorising the Violence Against Women Act on Tuesday, despite the efforts of a group of Republican men who tried to block it.

Florida senator Marco Rubio, who will deliver the official GOP response to the state of the union address on Tuesday night, led a group of 22 male Republicans who voted against the bill, which established a system for helping women in danger from domestic violence. No women or Democrats opposed the bill and it passed 78-22. It will now head to the House, where Republican leaders are resisting some of its provisions.

Restoring the gardens of Versailles to be fit for a king once more

A huge project is under way to reveal André Le Nôtre's original vision for Louis XIV's Petit Parc

On this January morning the air at Versailles is icy, the damp particularly penetrating. These were once marshes, before André Le Nôtre turned them into archetypal French-style gardens. To mark the 400th anniversary of his birth, the Petit Parc – Louis XIV's pleasure garden – is being restored to the state in which it was at the end of his reign, in 1715.

By all accounts, Joël Cottin, who has been working here for the past 30 years and now heads the Versailles gardens, shares the same genial disposition and team spirit associated with his mentor Le Nôtre.

Kenya holds 1st presidential debate

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Three weeks before they go to the polls, millions of Kenyans watched and listened to the nation's first-ever presidential debate, with the two front-running candidates trading barbs over the looming trial of one of them in the International Criminal Court.

Morning talk shows in Nairobi on Tuesday were still buzzing about the previous night's debate - broadcast live on Kenya's TV and radio stations - among eight presidential candidates who stood behind sleek, futuristic podiums. Much of the focus was on the two front-runners: Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's founding father, faces crimes against humanity charges at the ICC.

Computer Chess – first look review

Andrew Bujalski's funny, monochrome tale of the shabby beginnings of digital technology, shown at the Berlin film festival, is unique

Anyone disappointed by the authenticity of the Steve Jobs biopic really ought to take a look at this rather brilliantly conceived study of a (fictional) computer v computer chess tournament in the early 80s. (We know it's before 1984, as the tournament host claims he's put a bet on that it will take until then for a computer to beat a human at the game.) Written and directed by mumblecore maestro Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha, Mutual Appreciation), this is about as perfect a rendering of the era as you could ask for – to the extent you would genuinely not be surprised should this turn out to have been footage dug up from some time capsule buried in 1981.
